Egg of Columbus

An egg of Columbus refers to a brilliant idea or discovery that seems simple or easy after the fact.

When I recently read BIG’s book “Yes Is More” (an architecture book, by Bjarke Ingels Group), I learned about the story of the Columbus Egg, which I really liked, so I though I’d post it here, for you guys:

When Columbus returned from his discovery of America, his fellow explorers started questioning his feat.

Anyone could have found America if they would have just sailed long enough”, they said.

In response, Columbus took an egg and asked the gentlemen to place it on the table in an upright position. Thinking it easy, they started trying to balance the egg. After a round of failed attempts, they concluded it couldn’t be done. Columbus took the egg and hit it hard on the table, making the bottom crack flat so it could stand.

Hey, that’s cheating! You didn’t say we could crack the shell. If you do that, it’s easy.”

That’s right. It’s impossible until someone shows you how.” Columbus replied.

Googling the subject, I also found a song made about the story, by the band
The Extraordinaires.

New camera gear

I just got my self a new polariser filter for my camera!
It is a filter that makes you able to control reflections in your picture. And you can see through water surfaces. Because the filter removes reflections in your image, you’ll get more saturated images, and more contrast in sky/clouds etc. I’ve taken some quick snaps of items in my home, which shows a little bit of what it’s all about.

The images on the left is without using pol-filter, and the right images are where it is used, and you can see how the images become less messy, more saturated, and more defined.

Bodum Design Award 2011

This is my submission for the Bodum Design Award 2011. Bodum is a Danish tableware and kitchenware company, with focus on innovation and functionality. The contest was about designing a new product, with focus on these things.

My submission was actually an old idea that I had sketched down, and forgot all about. But when I saw this competition, I decided to use it. It is a spice rack, which is high and thin, like a little book, so that you can have all your spices facing you, when they stand on the shelf, so that you get a good overview of what you have. It is also decorative, compared to a messy cupboard, like on the image below.

I modelled a spice container in Cinema 4D, and used Photoshop to fill in the spices. Then I made two A1 posters, which I sent to the competition.

Spice 2
This is how most people have their spices in the cupboard. Not very practical nor decorative.

Kontrapunkt. Design agency of the year

Kontrapunkt - Design agency of the year

At the Creative Circle Awards 2011, my colleagues at Kontrapunkt took three prizes:

  • An award for a typeface for the world’s best restaurant Noma
  • An award for a packaging design for Japanese jewellery company Tasaki
  • The big prize for DESIGN AGENCY OF THE YEAR

I can’t brag about having been a part of it, because I just started working at KP2 / Kontrapunkt recently, but I’m exceedingly proud, having such skilled colleagues!

YCCA11 contributions

Two posters made for YCCA11. The brief was making a poster for Ægteskab Uden Grænser (Marriage across borders), branding their association, which informs people about the strict rules we have in Denmark, when one wants to marry somebody from another country.

The concept here, is listing some of the things that stand in the way, when you try to connect love between two people, across borders.

This poster plays with an old Danish children phrase, which goes: “fuck you, go away, you’re too small”. It is connected with the hand signals, as shown. We associate the Danish laws with naive small children, rejecting people based on minor things, such as being too small.

Both posters are made together with Kenneth Nytoft Petersen.

Young Creative Circle Award 2011

ycca11
I participated in this years Young Creative Circle Award. It is a competition that is held for young creatives, aged under 29, working in an a creative agency, or studying graphic design, or similar.

You get a brief, and then your team (2 persons) have 24 hours to come up with something exceptional, within the three categories: print, web or design. The best entires will be shortlisted, and the winners will go to Cannes, participating in the international contest.

I’ll post more info about my work in the competition later, when I’m allowed to publish it. But meanwhile, take a look here: www.creativecircle.dk.

Hired at KP2 / Kontrapunkt

I just got hired on a temporary project contract at KP2, which is a part of Kontrapunkt. Kontrapunkt is one of the leading design agencies in Denmark (and Northern Europe?). They called me in for a meeting, with a 2-hour notice at wednesday. They wanted me for the job, and I had until the next day at 12.00 to consider their offer. I accepted thursday morning, and friday morning I had my first day at KP2 – Pretty rapid start :c)

I’m working with Carlsberg and their brands — Carlsberg, Tuborg, Somersby etc., for markets all over the world. I was looking for something new, compared to my old position, and this definitely is.

UPDATE 2011.02.25:
I’ve now been permanently hired at KP / Kontrapunkt. I’ve been very happy working there so far, and this shows that they have been very satisfied with my effort. So could it be any better?..

The site is up and running!

Hello everybody. Today I got my website running, which includes a portfolio combined with this blog. The purpose of the website is to spread the word of my works, making people having my name in mind, when they need a graphic designer for something.

The porfolio part shows work that I’ve done, and short descriptions of the briefing, the work process and the results.

The purpose of this blog part is to give people insight in what I’m currently up to. It also shows stuff that I might not publish in my portfolio later on, because you kind of have to choose selected things you want to show — otherwise it would all get too messy, if I showed everything I had done.

But take a look around – Enjoy!
